What flash is the best?

Ok, so I asked this question a few days ago, but I am still searching for the right flash. I am looking for a nice off camera flash for portraits. I don't want to spend hundred of dollars on one, because I haven't really worked with flash photography much. I am looking to buy two flashes and an umbrella. I use a Canon T1i and I am planning on using a PC adapter cord. I am just looking for a general and cheaper flash system that is more for beginners, since I am new to these flashes. So what flash is the best? What do you use? Where can I get a light stand and swivel bracket/umbrella adapter for the flash? What should I get? Thanks!
